Bank Supervision

The Central Bank is also responsible for supervising activities of all financial institutions licensed in the country. It is tasked with regulating and supervising the financial sector in order to achieve a sound and efficient financial system. The Central Bank, working with other financial institutions in the country, is tasked with implementing the Money Laundering (Prevention) Act of 2001, which seeks to curtail the use of financial systems such as banks and other financial institutions for the purpose of money laundering.

To date the banking sector of the country remained with the four commercial banks three of which are subsidiaries of South African holding companies, one building society, and three credit institutions.
