CBE celebrates 50th anniversary
May 22, 2024‘Eswatini Placed On World Map Through JSE Listing’- Governor
May 27, 2024The Governor of the Central Bank of Eswatini (CBE) is of the view that Eswatini has been placed on the world following government’s listing of a bond of E4 billion in the Johannesburg Stock Exchange (JSE), of which E400 million has been raised. The six-year journey finally came to fruition on Friday May 24, 2024 when the Eswatini Government was officially welcomed to the JSE through the Ringing of the Bell ceremony. Commenting on the fact that this happened during this tenure, the Governor said, “We have been placed on the world map because by listing in the JSE, it means we are now a global player, and we know how strong and deep the JSE is, it’s a big milestone.
It also strengthens and enforces our role as a central banker to be an advisor to government and I believe we have executed this to the best of our abilities and have maintained our independence,” he said. The governor noted that the CBE had allowed the Ministry of Finance to guide the whole process while the Bank provided the technical input. “In my tenure, for us to help government diversify its sources of borrowing, especially in the SA market is massive. We know that most our pension funds are invested in the SA market so how best then to utilise this kind of instrument to repatriate Emaswati funds,” he added.
