In 2016, the Central Bank issued Legal Notice No. 147 of 2016 known as withdrawal of Currency (Coins) Notice, 2016. The Legal Notice states that all coins withdrawn from circulation shall be exchanged on demand, without charge at the Central Bank of Eswatini (CBE) or any other agency approved by the Minister for Finance, with effect from 1st September 2016 to 31st August 2021.

Effective 1st September 2016, all coin denominations excluding 5 cent coins issued before the year 2013 were withdrawn from circulation and ceased to be legal tender in the Kingdom of Eswatini. The coin denominations that will continue to circulate are coins rolled out from 2015 to date, including all 5 cents coins.

The public is advised to exchange the old coins minted from 1974 to 2013 for their equivalent amount at the Central Bank of Eswatini, Mbabane, Umntsholi Building or at any commercial bank licensed by the Central Bank.

The public is reminded that the deadline for exchanging the coins minted from 1974 to 2013 is 31st August 2021.
