March 11, 2025Monetary Policy Statement – 21 March 2025
March 21, 2025Last Friday, the CBE gathered professionals from both the public and private sectors to discuss insights on the National Budget recently presented by Minister of Finance Neal Rijkenberg. The Post-Budget Seminar, held at the Ezulwini Complex, provided an opportunity for the minister to revisit his speech, highlighting key areas such as taxes, the wage bill, procurement, and upcoming capital projects. He also addressed two major challenges facing the government: overspending and corruption, emphasizing that efforts to tackle these issues are being intensified.
A six-member panel, representing various sectors of the economy, offered their reactions to the minister’s budget speech. They pointed out that geopolitical tensions are undermining the country’s economic progress. Additionally, they called for a scrutiny of the challenges facing tertiary institutions. The panel also urged the government to ensure that its fiscal policies translated to the public, particularly in addressing youth unemployment and other critical issues. There was a suggestion for the government to revisit its revenue-generating strategies, focusing on effective collective measures rather than increasing taxes, and to strike a balance between political directives and economic growth initiatives.
